A nearly black-skinned producer of a full-bodied red wine, Rondo was developed in 1964 in then-Czechoslovakia by crossing the varieties Zarya Severa (a hybrid which has the disease-resistant Vitis amurensis in its pedigree) and St. Laurent. It is early-ripening and has very good resistance to mildew and late frost.

Best results on own-root vines occur in GDD regions of 1700-1800. This moderate producer is hardy to USDA Zone 5.
